On Saturday, August 21, 2010, HarborPark Jazz and Blues Festival (HPJB) celebrated its 7th anniversary with a new and exciting lineup of musical talent. Considered one of Kenosha’s favorite music events, this festival has welcomed many national and regional jazz and blues artists and attracted thousands of concertgoers to Kenosha's scenic lakefront. To celebrate its 7th year, HPJB featured an infusion of smooth jazz, salsa, and string ensemble performers, as well as an assortment of food and beverages, arts and crafts, and an enjoyable summer's evening alongside Lake Michigan.
Marion Meadows - Headliner
Born in West Virginia, Marion Meadows began playing the saxophone as a teenager and later became a protégé of jazz greats Joe Henderson and Eddie Daniels. His career blossomed, however, while waiting for a train in New York's Grand Central Station. To pass the time, he played his horn and was heard by a TV composer who introduced Meadows to jazz keyboardist Bob James. He went on to perform with Eartha Kitt, Brook Benton, and the Temptations, before launching his solo career in 1990.
Nabori
NaboriThe 2010 festival also welcomes Nabori, an 11-piece ensemble from Milwaukee, performing salsa music, and transporting the audience to the projects and barrios of Puerto Rico and the streets of New York City's Latin Harlem, where salsa was born and popularized. Formed in 2006, Nabori has quickly become one of the most sought-after Latin groups in the region, earning accolades, and performing at venues such as Summerfest, Jazz in the Park, the Kohler Arts Festival, and more.
Tremper Golden Strings
In addition, the popular, strolling musicians of Tremper High School's Golden Strings entertained at the HarborPark Jazz Festival with its brand of classical and popular music. Under the direction of Helen Breitenbach, the Golden Strings have toured the United States and the world, acting as musical ambassadors in Hong Kong, Austria, and Germany. They are celebrating their 38th year and are releasing a CD this summer.
Performing in two of Kenosha’s sister cities, Wolfenbuettel, Germany and Douai, France was a highlight for the Golden Strings in 2009. Students stayed with host families, explored the wonders of the Volkswagen in the recently opened Autostadt museum, and traveled through Berlin visiting the parliament in Germany. Viewing Paris from the Eiffel Tower was spectacular as was touring the beautiful musical city of Prague.
"The Golden Strings is a very mature group of young musicians. You can see in their faces they enjoy what they do! Their performances at the Lakeview Grille were awesome!"
